DESCRIPTION OF ITINERARY:
DAY 01: CUSCO – PISCACUCHO – PATALLACTA – HUAYLLABAMBA:
Early morning (04:30am) a driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you until Piscacucho community km 82, on the Cusco-Machupicchu railroad (starting point of the hike), a car trip of 2:30hrs, passing on the way Chincheros, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo villages in the sacred valley. Arrival at Piscacucho community km 82 (2680m/8790ft), place where we will pass a footbridge and the check point to start our trek (make sure your passport in hand). Breakfast included + use of bathroom. Here we get in contact with the porters and cooks who will accompany us along the journey (43 km / 27 miles), we will begin the Inca Trail with a gentle walk of 3 hours, following the edge of the Urubamba river overlooking the snow peak of veronica (5750m/18,860ft) and passing the cactus and native bushes, reaching to Miskay (2800m), then ascend in direction to the left to get Willkaraccay, and across the Inca town of Patallacta (terrace town – ancient Inca check point). Lunch included during trip. We continue our journey for about 3:30 hrs through the valley along the river Kusichaca observing farming terraces (maize), the flora and fauna of the area until we reach our first campsite Huayllabamba (3000m). Dinner in tents. Overnight in Huayllabamba.

DAY 02: HUAYLLABAMBA – AYAPATA – WARMIWAÑUSCA PASS – PACAYMAYU:
Breakfast in tents. Then we continue our trip for about 1 hour followed by a soft uphill through woods to Ayapata valley (3,300m / 10,824ft). Today is our challenge with the most difficult hike ascending 1200m planned in 2 stages, 2-3 hours hike with several stops by narrow roads along the journey where we see the landscape changes according the altitude of the area (from tropical to dry zone), on the way we see the snowy peak of Huayanay, passing Corralpunku valley, where we will see birds as hummingbirds, falcons, eagles or perhaps condors. Then we enter into cloud forest habitat of pumas, reaching to Llulluchapama, where we have lunch. After lunch we continue with our hike for another 2-3 hrs ascending 600m up to the top of mountain Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass) (4200m/13,776ft), here from where we have a panoramic view of valleys, snowy picks and mountains, animals such as llamas and alpacas, some wild plants such as straw. We take a short stop, then we descend across forests for 2-3 hours inhabited by sparrows and the Andean bear, until reach our campsite in Pacaymayu nearby watefalls and snow-covered mountain. Dinner in tents. Overnight in Pacaymayu.

DAY 03: PACAYMAYU – RUNRURACAY – PHUYUPATAMARKA – WIÑAYHUAYNA:
Breakfast in tents. Then we start our trip early, we follow for 1 hour a well-preserved paved stone, this will be the longest way but the most interesting, ascending to the second pass of Runcuracay (3800m/12,464ft), an Inca archaeological site and guard post. From here the trail is downhill through arriving to Sayacmarca (3624m/11,887ft), from where we see the landscape change according to geography of the zone. Lunch at this stop. Continuing our walk we will pass at Chaquiqocha (Small Lake) where there are toilet facilities, then we will pass into the Inca tunnel, finally arriving to the third mountain pass of Phuyupatamarca (town of the clouds) which is 3750m/12,300ft, this is one of the archaeological complex most complete and best preserved which is located on the highest point of the mountain, where you will see a sophisticated complex of fountains with solid foundations and with stunning views of Urubamba river, and natural tunnels, following our journey we will walk for about 3 hours downhill (2000 stone steps) for our next stop which is Wiñayhuayna (2700m/8,856ft) on route to the jungle, our last camp site, where is located the most spectacular Inca site, after machupicchu, on this place existed a hostel for decades, but currently closed. Dinner in tents. Overnight at Wiñayhuayna.

DAY 04: WIÑAYHUAYNA – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO:
Breakfast in tents. We start walking early; this being the last day crossing the mountains we get to Intipunku (Sun Gate) this place is the entrance to the citadel from where you have a spectacular panoramic view of Machupicchu. Here we will observe the sunrise over the majestic Machupicchu. We descend to Machupicchu arriving there in 40 minutes to visit the lost city of the Incas. Guided tour of the citadel, visiting the main square which was destined for rituals, the circular tower used for ceremonies related to the June solstice, the Sacred Sundial carved from a single rock which was used to determine the time and seasons, the cuartos reales were rooms of royalty, the Temple of Three Windows with walls of large blocks were assembled like a puzzle, and finally cemeteries which represents one of the best work of Inca architecture still survives. Machu Picchu Inca ancient town was built in stone in the middle of the XV century on the top of mountains of Machu Picchu and Huaynapicchu in the eastern slopes of the Andes, where its main square is 2490m. Machupicchu would have been the residence of the Inca Pachacutec 1438 – 1470 first Inca emperor; also it was as a religious shrine, military, astronomical and residential. On July 7, 2007 Machupicchu was declared one of the 7 new wonders of the world in an official ceremony held in Lisboa Portugal. Today the fortress of Machu Picchu is considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering Inca. Free time to stroll around the citadel. Then we take the bus to go down to Machu Picchu Pueblo / Aguas Calientes. Lunch in one of several restaurants in Aguas Calientes or if you wish at Sanctuary Lodge. Finally a return trip by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and by bus from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.

Optional hotsprings US$3.5 and entrance fees to climb Huaynapicchu Mountain (US$12) and gratuities for the guide, cook and porters. Our staff is well paid so tipping is voluntary, as desired.

For Inca Trail Trekking our company, in shared operation with our partner in Cusco employ solar-powered lamps for our staff, to give an excellent service at night, thus substitute the gas lamps currently employed by many local companies.

COLLECTIVE TENTS:
For Inca Trail program it is employed dining tents, kitchen tents, toilet tents, and shower tents available. Additional to camping equipment we have porter backpacks, support belts, shoes, duffle bags, porter jackets, all manufactured in Peru. Besides our partner in Cusco have provided free insurance for all Inca Trail staff, we can guarantee that our staff are well paid in Cusco region, we consider them as the absolute minimum requirements for treating our camp staff fairly and as human beings.

SLEEPING MATS/PADS & SLEEPING BAGS:
For giving a top comfort service for all our clients at Inca Trail we work widely with three layers of orthopedic foamy pads, to guarantee a good rest, after a long hiking. Our company, in shared operation with our partner in Cusco provide for our guests clean and comfortable sleeping bags (eureka), who offers different models in remote areas far away from city for different temperatures.

KITCHEN EQUIPMENT / TABLEWARE & CUTLERY:
For ensuring a maximum hygiene and the best service possible, our company, in shared operation with our partner in Cusco buy all fresh produce and food directly from local markets, where we can find out fresh fruits, meat, fish, potatoes, vegetables and others. Also it is employed for Inca Trail cutlery which is stainless steel, dishes, cups and glassware made in China, as Machupicchu is located on the way to jungle, and the weather is warmer and plastic equipment not good. Besides the kitchen is equipped also with ovens, exclusive for our clients.

WATER FILTERS & SHOWER FACILITIES:
Rumbo Explora guarantee all meals and food along the Inca Trail. Travellers do not have to bring water purification tablets or water filters on the trek. Be sure that we operate in areas where water source is clean besides it is filtered for cooking and boiled for drinking purposes, and it is regularly monitored, for not put our clients’ health at risk. We use biodegradable soup and detergent. For luxury & private services our company, in shared operation with our partner in Cusco offer to visitors shower tents facilities (30L) exclusive for clients of Rumbo Explora.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSABILITY:
Toilet facilities: As Salkantay Trek program takes 05Days or perhaps only 04Days, our company, in shared operation with our partner in Cusco employ (toilet tent) portable toilet facilities including biodegradable bags (manufactured in United States). Some organic wastes are taken out and buried in remote areas far away from Inca Trail, or carried back to Cusco. On the Inca Trail there are not proper flush toilets.
In Cusco & Machupicchu: On Inca Trail (protected area) is not allowed drop-off rubbish or polluting the environment that is why our Company put in operation the collecting of garbage from all our excursions where we operate following the Peruvian regulations, respecting the protection to environment.
In Puno & Lake Titicaca: Rumbo Explora recommends to all our drivers during the excursions, put on tourist transportations and motor boats a small rubbish bin and all this will be taken to the garbage collector and then to the Municipal dump, to avoid the pollution in Lake Titicaca region.
In Arequipa & Colca Valley: As the excursion to Colca Valley takes 02Days or more, people carry water in plastic bottles for several days, which produces garbage against the environment. We decided to collect all wastes possible from all our tours, especially from our Trekking program in Colca Valley where we operate, taking back to Arequipa to send to Municipal dump.
Lima & Nazca-Paracas and other places: Lima, Nazca and Paracas are towns located on the desert, where the temperature in summer gets warm up to 30°-35° degrees, and wastes produce contamination. We suggest to all our visitors put the wastes into the rubbish bin.

FOR EMERGENCIES – FIRST-AID-KITS & OXYGEN BOTTLES:
Inca Trail program, Salkantay & Ausangate Mountain, Lares Trek and others implies downs and ups along the trekking and not medical centers, in some areas our clients will cross hiking over 4300m/14,100feet, is our priority to carry for emergencies oxygen & first aid kit, exclusive for foreign. Our guides are trained in first aid, and we can guarantee the trekking for the Inca Trail program and all treks where we operate. In a future not far away we will provide satellite phone as a priority for our services on Inca Trail program, exclusive for our clients and staff, just for emergencies.

IMPORTANT: Our tourist transportation vehicles have nation wide circulation permit and 2 types of insurance (Certificate of Statutory Accident Insurance Transit SOAT, besides has vehicle Insurance Policy to all risks in record) + oxygen & first aid kit + panoramic windows + reclining & confortable seats, exclusive for our demanding customers. Rumbo Explora provide to visitors all possible choices.
